Dixon Grove Junior Middle School, Etobicoke, ON, Canada | April – May, 2016
As an emerging artist with VIBE Arts, I was invited to be an artist-in-residence at Dixon Grove’s afterschool program, Beyond 3:30. I created a textile piece titled, ‘Spring Showers’ an artwork designed to be a fun and celebratory piece inspired by the fact that this residency took place during the much awaited springtime. The fabric was chosen to be a clear indicator of the spring. I knew I wouldn’t have been able to complete a full raincoat during the residency, so I designed a loose gentle covering that could act as coat and provide shelter from spring showers. To tie in with the playful spirit of flowers and springtime, sequins and buttons were sewn around the edges of the covering. Â Students visited me throughout this residency and it was a great experience to teach and guide them through sewing techniques!
