Lawrence Heights Middle School, Toronto, ON, Canada | April – May, 2015

Over 8 visits to Lawrence Heights’ after school program, Beyond 3:30, I made a textile artwork titled ‘Strong in the City.’ I wanted to work with a limited colour pallet and create a piece that was more complex than a basic scarf but not too detailed that it would take longer than the 8 sessions I had. Strong in the City was designed as a costume cape inspired by superheroes that included symbols to represent the pressures of city life (eyes on your back and earning your stripes). Throughout the residency students visited me and I enjoyed guiding them through sewing techniques as they contributed to the piece. Many thanks to Arts for Children and Youth for organizing this event and introducing me to the community at Lawrence Heights.
